Naeemah Clark and Jonathan Jones present at Chuck Stone Diversity Program

Jonathan Jones and Naeemah Clark[/caption]Elon University School of Communications faculty members Naeemah Clark and Jonathan Jones both gave presentations at the Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The program is offered to rising high school seniors.

Clark, an associate professor, offered the July 6 keynote address. She talked about the importance of maintaining a good name in the media profession and the responsibility that comes with the power of creating labels for others.

“We are lucky to have been given these names, but now the onus is on us,” Clark said. “Because giving you the name and all that it encompasses means that someone else’s part of the job is done.  Building your name is your responsibility.”

Jones, an instructor in the School of Communications and the director of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition, spoke July 8 and focused his remarks on the First Amendment and libel law. Jones discussed speech protections, what the crafters of the amendment intended and how students can think about it all in modern society. He also provided quick tips for avoiding libel.
