Hosted by the American College Personnel Association, the Summer Leadership Institute offered a series of workshops advancing leadership and management potential.
ACPA develops leaders in higher education to create inclusive, informed, and engaging campus environments for college students.
The two-day Institute for state and international division presidents and elects, which Bosch co-led with Jason Cottrell, associate director of new student services at North Central Carolina University, was attended by nearly 40 leaders across the 25-plus state divisions and the Caribbean and offered a series of workshops advancing leadership and management potential. It featured large-group sessions on equity and inclusion, recognizing one’s privilege and advocacy around social and professional identities, and developing ourselves as higher education professionals by staying on current trend with emerging topics and research across colleges and universities.
Sessions included infusion of emerging technologies into university work, marketing and branding, diversifying your board of directors, ways to engage professionals in student learning, and techniques for providing high-quality affordable professional development workshops and educational sessions for faculty, administrators, staff, support staff, graduate and undergraduate students to advance their understanding around college student learning theory and practice.
Additional breakout sessions for the conference included recruitment and retention of professionals and students, updates on ACPA’s ongoing Strategic Plan to advance research, scholarship, social justice, and career development, as well as a session entitled “Leading Leaders” led by Matthew Antonio who has served the last 6 years on ACPA’s National Governing Board as Coordinator for State Divisions. This session explored the importance of setting expectations, motivating your team, defining and abiding by roles and structure within a university context, and showcasing authenticity about one’s own professional strengths and areas of growth while leading leaders. The session received rave reviews, and was the only session requested to be offer twice during the Summer Leadership Institute.
