The associate professor of religious studies presented "Embodying Sōtō Zen: Institutional Identity and Ideal Body-Image at Eiheiji Temple, Japan” at the Association of Asia Studies Annual Conference in Philadelphia.

Winfield, Associate Professor, Department of Religious Studies; Coordinator, Asian Studies Program[/caption]Founded by zen master Dōgen in 1243, Eiheiji temple is one of the two main monastic training centers of Sōtō Zen Buddhism in Japan. This conference paper highlighting the architectural and figural bodies of the site condensed her research at Eiheiji in the summer of 2013.
The project was facilitated by an FR&D summer stipend and a short-term travel grant from the Association of Asian Studies. The longer version of Winfield’s paper will appear in “Dōgen and Sōtō Zen,” edited by Steven Heine (Oxford University Press, forthcoming).
