College students are busy learning in our classrooms, participating in campus activities, studying abroad, volunteering in the community, working on campus or off, and being active in many other ways. How can we better understand what learning looks like from their perspectives and engage them inside and outside our classrooms in meaningful ways?
This year’s conference theme, Student Engagement: The View from Their Seats, is reflected in sessions that explore various strategies for engaging students in learning. The day starts with an opening plenary with David Green, Director of the Center for Faculty Development at Seattle University, focused on “Front-row seats: Lifting the veil on faculty preconceptions of undergraduates,” and ends with an interactive closing plenary with students and faculty focused on creative ways to promote intellectual growth and engaged education.
And, in between, concurrent sessions focus on understanding student perspectives on their learning and on ways to deepen learning through active and collaborative pedagogies that engage and expand student perspectives. Sessions also explore using technology and/or social media to engage students in- and out-of the classroom, on- and off-campus learning. And, still other sessions examine ways to include student voices and perspectives in course or assignment design and to bridge.
