'Germany and the United States: The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership' – Sept. 24

The program co-sponsored by the Business German Speaker Series and the Student Professional Development Center takes place at 5:30 p.m. in the LaRose Digital Theatre of the Koury Business Center.

The Business German Speaker Series, in cooperation with the Student Professional Development Center and supported by a grant from the Fund for Excellence in the Arts and Sciences, will host Christoph Sander, consul general of the Federal Republic of Germany, with a public presentation on Sept. 24 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in LaRose Digital Theatre of the Koury Business Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

Sander will be the highest ranking government official from the Federal Republic of Germany ever to have visited Elon and his talk, “Germany and the United States: The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership,” looks at a trade agreement, presently being negotiated between the European Union and the United States, that aims at removing trade barriers in a wide range of economic sectors to make it easier to buy and sell goods and services between the EU and the United States.

Independent research shows that the TTIP could boost the EU economy by $155.4 billion and the U.S. economy by $116.5 billion. North Carolina exported $5 billion annually in goods to the EU (2011-2013 average), making it the state’s second largest export market. Goods exports from North Carolina to the EU increased by 9 percent from 2011 to 2013.

Sander also will speak about German-American business and economic relations in the Southeastern United States, the role of Germany in the world economy, and the importance of knowing the German language and culture for a successful business career.
