Created in 2013, the program provides students with a basic skill set the Peace Corps and its participatory countries need for successful community projects.
Elon received recognition for its innovative Peace Corps Prep program in the STARS 2014 Annual Review, a publication that highlights recent sustainability innovations and best practices from more than 100 colleges and universities representing institutions in the United States, Canada, Ecuador, Japan, the Netherlands and Switzerland.
The Peace Corps Prep Program launched in 2013 when Elon became the sixth college or university in the United States to sign a cooperative agreement with the Peace Corps. The program enhances and accelerates the work of the Peace Corps by preparing its potential volunteers beforehand through academic and experiential-based training.
Required areas of academic study include global issues, sustainable food systems, environmental studies and foreign language proficiency.
The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education is the organization that facilitates Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) certification. The certification provides a framework for colleges and universities to measure and track sustainability performance. Elon is STARS silver certified.
