Scheduled to be shown on campus the day after Veterans Day, the film will be followed by a Q&A with director Dan Hayes.
An Elon University business management class will host a screening of “Honor Flight” on Wednesday with the film’s director taking part in an audience Q&A immediately afterward.
The 7 p.m. event on Nov. 12, 2014, in the university’s Lakeside Meeting Rooms comes the day after Veterans Day. It is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
Organizers said they hope to welcome to campus local veterans from the surrounding communities.
“Honor Flight” follows a group of World War II veterans on “a trip of a lifetime” to see a memorial opened in 2004 in Washington, D.C., to honor the 16 million people who served their country during the conflict.
The nonprofit Honor Flight organization was created in 2005 to fly many of those veterans from their homes to visit the memorial on the National Mall. In 2009, the idea for filming a documentary about the Honor Flight organization was born, and the movie was produced using footage collected over the next two years.
Directed by Dan Hayes, the film premiered on Memorial Day 2012. On Aug. 11, 2012, it set the Guinness World Record for most people attending a film screening when 28,442 people attended a screening at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
Students in MGT 410 “Project Management,” led by Professor Matthew Valle, organized Elon’s event. The class took on the project when Elon alumnus Patrick Brown ’14 approached Valle with the idea of bringing the film to campus.
The event is funded through a special allocation from the Student Government Association.
