The Student Government Association and the Office of Student Health and Wellness is sponsoring a toy drive for Toys for Tots from Nov. 24 - Dec. 5.
The Elon University Student Government Association and the Office of Student Health and Wellness, in conjunction with Alamance County Marine Corps League and Marine Corps Reserve, will sponsor donations this season for “Toys for Tots” on the Elon campus.
The local Toys for Tots campaign assisted 3,000 families in Alamance County in 2013 by working in cooperation with other agencies and churches to distribute toys to needy children. The university’s help can provide a tangible sign of hope for economically disadvantaged children at the holidays. With recent economic turns and mass layoffs in the county, the need in Alamance County continues to grow.
This year’s Toys for Tots campus campaign will be dedicated in memory of two individuals: Jim Gordon and Mike Wozniak. Gordon (father of Associate Professor Barbara Gordon) and Wozniak (former chief of police in Gibsonville) were Marine Corps veterans, champions for children, and instrumental in initiating Elon’s partnership several years ago.
The Gibsonville Police Department has committed to continuing the partnership with SGA in their honor.
There are many ways individuals, organizations and other groups (residence halls, classes, office suites, etc.) can help with the Toys for Tots campaign:
Drop off new, unwrapped toys at labeled collection receptacles located in Moseley Center (near the main entrance to Moseley and by the mailroom), Lindner Hall, main lobby of the Francis Center, Alamance rotunda, and the Ellington Center from Nov. 24 – Dec. 5. Can’t locate a container? Call the Office of Student Health and Wellness at x7200 and arrange for someone to pick it up! All toy donations should be made by Dec. 5, 2014, so the local Marine Corps Reserve Unit and League can distribute toys in time to local social services agencies.
Make a tax deductible financial donation to the Toys for Tots Foundation. The foundation allocates contributions to local Marine Corps units to serve the children locally. Checks for tax deductible donations may be made payable to the Toys for Tots Foundation and mailed via campus mail to Campus Box 2040 (no stamp needed!). Checks will be presented to the local Marine Corps Reserve Unit on Dec. 5. Tax receipts will be mailed to you. You can also forward you donation electronically via the Toys for Tots Foundation website at http://www.toysfortots.org/donate/Default.aspx.
You can also make a “spare change” donation to the drive. Collect change (dollars too!) at your organization meetings or clean your desk and your car, and deliver the money to the Office of Student Health and Wellness (Ellington Center) by December 5. The center will process the change at the local State Employees Credit Union and make a “lump sum” donation to the local Marine Corps Service League Unit.
Collectively, even smaller amounts can “add up” to bring joy to many children! The Student Government Association and the Office of Student Health and Wellness thank you for your support.
