Professor of Music Thomas Erdmann had an article and CD review published in a professional trumpet journal.
Professor Thomas Erdmann in the Department of Music had an article published in the January 2015 issue of The International Trumpet Guild Journal.
The article, “Carl Saunders: The Greatest Trumpeter You’ve Never Heard,” is about the Los Angeles studio music legend. Saunders began his career at the age of 18 when he joined Stan Kenton’s band. After two years he left Kenton to play drums in Bobby Sherwood’s lounge group. After doing that for two years Saunders left that situation and became a full-time Vegas show trumpeter, except for occasional tours with artists like Paul Anka, Charlie Barnet, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Robert Goulet, Harry James, Buddy Rich, and Si Zentner, among others.
In 1984 Saunders relocated to Los Angeles where he has played on hundreds upon hundreds of recordings, movie soundtracks, jingles and concerts. Still playing today in his 70s, Saunders was described by the late great trombonist Carl Fontana as “the greatest trumpeter you’ve never heard.”
Erdmann’s review of the Pete McGuinness Jazz Orchestra’s CD, “Strength In Numbers,” was also published in the same issue of the journal.
