The spoken word performer and filmmaker visits campus Thursday for a 6 p.m. talk in McCrary Theatre as part of the university's 2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Beloved Community Celebration event series.
Thursday, January 15
Kip Fulbeck, “Race, Sex and Tattoos”
McCrary Theatre, 6 p.m.
A pioneering artist, spoken word performer and filmmaker, Kip Fulbeck is empowered by his own background and confronts media imagery, interracial dating patterns, and icons of race and sex in the United States, constantly questioning where to “fit in” in a country that ignores multiracialism. His multimedia performance weaves his collected stories and images with spoken word, film, photography, and pop culture to explore multiracial identity, tattoo culture and contemporary America. A book signing will follow the performance.
Fulbeck has been featured on CNN, MTV, the Today show and PBS, and has performed and exhibited in more than twenty countries and throughout the United States. He is the author of several books including Mixed: Portraits of Multiracial Kids; Part Asian, 100% Hapa; and Permanence:Tattoo Portraits, as well as the director of a dozen short films including Banana Split and Lilo & Me.
Currently a professor of art at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Fulbeck is recipient of the university’s distinguished teaching award and has been named an outstanding faculty member five times in recognition for his work promoting multiracial awareness. He was awarded the inaugural Loving prize at the 2009 Mixed Roots film & literary festival (Los Angeles) and received the Harvard University Cultural Pioneer Award in 2010. In 2014, he was named a local hero by southern California’s KCET public broadcasting service and also received the community builder award at Vancouver’s Hapa-palooza festival.
A complete overachiever, he is also an avid surfer, guitar player, ocean lifeguard, pug enthusiast and multiple-time national champion in U.S. masters swimming.
