Forty-five business students were named to the Love School of Business’ Honor Roll for Social Responsibility for fall 2014.
During the fall 2014 semester, 45 undergraduate students of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business each completed at least 20 hours of community service, earning a spot on the LSB Honor Roll for Social Responsibility.
The LSB Honor Roll for Social Responsibility recognizes students’ commitment to volunteerism and community service. Under the leadership of Robert Moorman, Frank S. Holt, Jr. Professor of Business Leadership and Stacy Outlaw, director of undergraduate programs, the program aims to create responsible business professionals who understand how business success is linked to both financial and socially responsible performance.
To earn a place on the honor roll, full-time undergraduate business students completed a minimum of 20 hours of community service during the fall 2014 semester. Service was performed through the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement, classes, university sponsored service trips and student organizations.
Michael Keenan ’15 volunteered at Fundación CEPPA (Centro de Estudios para la Paz) in San José, Costa Rica this past semester.
“I developed a proposal for a program that teaches prisoners entrepreneurial skills and gives them micro-loans for new businesses upon release from prison,” Keenan said. “It was rewarding for me to be able to use the skills I have learned in my classes and to apply that those to reducing crime rates in San José.”
Ariel Mittleman ’18 worked with the Burlington Development Corporation through her Management Information Systems service-learning course last semester.
“I helped make a database for Burlington Development Corporation so they could track their progress with all the programs they provide,” Mittleman said. “It was rewarding to be able to fulfill a need for the organization within the community.”
Sophomore business student Oscar Miranda volunteered at Turtle Island during an alternative fall break trip.
“Through this experience I learned that I was capable of doing so much more than I thought I knew,” Miranda said. “Elon is well known at Turtle Island for having students that come ready to get their hands dirty and help out the community. It was great to be able to uphold their expectations as an Elon student.”
