The North Carolina Court of Appeals will hold proceedings in the Robert E. Long Courtroom at Elon Law on Tuesday, Feb. 3, followed by a discussion with Elon Law students and a reception with judges and members of the legal community.
Judges Rick Elmore, Mark Davis and John M. Tyson will preside over the proceedings, which begin at 1:30 at Elon Law. The two cases scheduled for argument are State v. Williams (14-1101) and State v. Sheets (14-1102).
Judges Elmore, Davis and Tyson will participate in a question and answer forum with Elon Law students following court proceedings at 4 pm, followed by a 4:30 pm reception with students, faculty and staff of Elon Law and the broader legal community.
The North Carolina Court of Appeals reviews the proceedings that occurred in the trial courts for errors of law or legal procedure; it decides only questions of law – not questions of fact. All cases appealed from the Superior and District courts in civil and criminal cases, except capital murder cases in which the Superior Court pronounces a judgment imposing the death penalty, are heard by the Court of Appeals.
The Robert E. Long Courtroom at Elon Law is home to the North Carolina Business Court, making Elon one of the few law schools in the country to share space with a working court.
