Students and faculty from Elon University's School of Communications placed in several awards categories in the 2015 Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts. They will be recognized at the organization's annual conference April 12-15 in Las Vegas.
The 2015 Broadcast Education Association’s Festival of Media Arts recognized eight entries submitted by School of Communications faculty and students.[/caption]Eight entries submitted by School of Communications faculty and students received awards in the 2015 Broadcast Education Association’s (BEA) Festival of Media Arts. This year the festival received 1,352 total submissions – with more than 1,100 in the student competition alone.
Winners will receive recognition and exhibition of their works during BEA’s annual convention held April 12-15 in Las Vegas.

Faculty Documentary Competition
Thomas A. Nelson, associate professor of communications, and J McMerty, director of the Elon in Los Angeles Program and assistant professor of communications, received an award of excellence for their project, “The Story of Marion Ellet.” The film highlights the life and work of columnist Marion Ellet, who worked for the Concordia Blade-Empire, a newspaper in Concordia, Kansas. The project competed in the Short Form Video or Film Documentary Category.
Student Video Competition
Matt Lee ’16, Becca Evans ’16, Catherine Leonard ’15 and Lexi Williams ’17 placed second in the Narrative Category for their video, “Incestry.”
Brian Szymanski ’16, Jessica Stober ’15, Daniel Spiller ’15, Jon Smith ’15 and Ben Stringfellow ’15 tied for second in the Spot Category for their commercial, “The Painters Roost.”
Wilson Hester ’15 and Peter Walpole ’15 tied for second in the Spot Category for their video, “Everlast: Greatness is Within.”
Student Interactive Multimedia Competition
Two teams of graduate students in the M.A. in Interactive Media program won awards in the Interactive Multimedia competition.
The first team placed second in the Large Team Category for their website, “Finca La Esperanza.” As a part of their 2014 Winter Term Fly-In experience, students traveled to Costa Rica to document the work of a family running a local organic sustainable farm. The project team consisted of Kara O’Halloran, Lucas Lovett, Matthew Culloty, Jessica Kingman, Philip Page, Tynesha Brown, Daron Vaught and Morgan Hembarsky.
The second team earned third place in the Large Team Category for their submission, “Restore Old Havana.” As a part of the same Winter Term Fly-In experience, this team traveled to Cuba to document the physical restoration of the city. The group consisted of Laura Smith, Brenna Mickey, Jen Buxton, Melody Mechanic, Reggie Peterson, Aaron Petrick and Brandon Himmelman.
Student Documentary Competition
Brian Binder ’15, Brian Mezerski ’15 and Amory Parks ’16 received an honorable mention in the Short Form Video or Film Documentary Category for their film, “forte – documentary.”
Ryan Greene ’15, Evan McGillivray ’16, Matthew Mintzer ’15 and Mezerski received an honorable mention in the Short Form Video or Film Documentary Category for their film, “ELN: Behind the Scenes – Election.”
