The Make-A-Wish Foundation made it possible this year for an Elon University sophomore to attend the Grammy Awards as part of a five-day visit to Los Angeles with her mother and a longtime friend.
Sophomore Amy Wolf, who survived Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in high school, had the opportunity to attend the open rehearsals the day before the ceremony, and during the red carpet walk was seated at the front of the bleachers.
“We sat in the front so when stars saw our Make-a-Wish sign, we could quickly get their autograph and get a photograph of our own,” said the human service studies major.
During the February ceremony, Wolf said that they saw stars Nicole Kidman, Kanye West, Beyonce and Jay-Z coming into the arena. They also attended the “Around the World” themed after-party.
“It was wonderful finally being able to go on my Make-A-Wish trip,” she said.
While in Los Angeles, she also visited Venice Beach, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Griffith Observatory, overlooking the Hollywood Sign and The Grove, an outdoor mall and farmers market. She was joined on the trip by her mother, Karen Wolf, and longtime friend Amy Weinstock, whom she met at a Jewish summer camp in New York during high school.
“One thing that I think Make-A-Wish really does a good job of is granting ‘celebrity’ wishes, which are the chance to meet a given celebrity or go to a major sporting event or an event like The Grammys,” said Julia Lowe, the Wish Coordinator who worked with Wolf at the Eastern North Carolina chapter of Make-A-Wish.
Wolf, who said that at one point she was in the ICU for three months, has been cancer-free for almost three years.
At Elon, she is involved with Hillel as the social justice and action chair on the board, and works with the family committee and as a miracle child for ELONTHON.
Make-A-Wish’s website says that it grants the wish of a child with a life-threatening illness every 38 minutes. Wolf’s wish was made in 2012.
