The longtime School of Education faculty member served Elon in retirement as its official university decorator. The Elon Medallion recipient, whose career included time as a school teacher and principal, witnessed firsthand pivotal moments in North Carolina history.
Professor Emerita Lucile Stone Andes[/caption]Professor Emerita Lucile Stone Andes, a longtime member of the School of Education faculty and a former university decorator, has died at the age of 97, the university has learned.
Plans for a memorial service at the Elon Community Church are still being finalized.
Before embarking on her distinguished 30-year career with Elon, Stone was an elementary school teacher and principal. She later wrote a third-grade spelling textbook adopted by schools nationwide.
Stone shared many details about her life in a 2007 interview for an Elon University history class project led by Professor Mary Jo Festle. Stone witnessed pivotal moments in North Carolina history, including the racial integration of Burlington’s public schools.
The entrance plaza of the Elon Community Church was named the William J. Andes and Lucile Stone Plaza in 2002 in honor of Lucile Stone and her late second husband, a member of Elon’s Class of 1935 and the church’s former pastor. Bill Andes died in 2009.
In 1998, Lucile Stone received the Elon Medallion, the highest honored bestowed by the university, for her distinguished service to the school.
