Earth Day celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2015, and several campus activities will offer students, faculty, staff and community members an opportunity to learn how their actions impact the planet - and what they can do to be good stewards of the environment.
Several student organizations and departments at Elon University have collaborated to offer an event each day during Earth Week, from canoeing to eating local food, and from working in the community garden to networking with students interested in sustainability.
Earth Week on campus runs from April 19-25, 2015, with Earth Day itself taking place April 22.
Danielle Nierenberg, president of Food Tank, an organization that draws attention to environmentally, socially and economically sustainable ways of alleviating hunger, obesity and poverty, serves as the university’s Earth Week keynote speaker. She visits campus for a 7:30 p.m. talk on Tuesday, April 21, in McKinnon Hall.
New this year is Party for the Planet, a celebration of the wide variety of sustainability efforts with which students are involved. The student-planned event on Wednesday, April 22, on the plaza outside of Lakeside Dining Hall will feature food, music and fun activities. Multiple sustainability-related campus organizations will be present.
The event also includes Swap Shop, a space where anyone can donate small items like books or clothing and take an item in exchange.
The Sustainability Projects Database also launches during Earth Week. The database contributes to long-term campus sustainability by creating a platform for any member of the campus community to see what student research has been done on sustainability and to submit project ideas.
Students, faculty and staff can submit completed research projects or propose project ideas.
