Elon University's chapter of Colleges Against Cancer is hosting its third annual relay on April 24 to benefit the American Cancer Society while honoring the memories of those who died from the disease.
Hundreds of people representing dozens of teams will come together this month to raise money for the American Cancer Society at a “Relay for Life” on the fields behind the Gerald L. Francis Center.
From 6 p.m. Friday, April 24, through 6 a.m. the following morning, participants will walk the fields to celebrate the memories of those lost to cancer, to honor cancer survivors, and to raise awareness of a disease affecting millions of Americans.
Members of all teams will take turns walking throughout the night to symbolize the struggle of cancer patients and caretakers everywhere.
Organized by the Elon University chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, fundraising efforts include a “Hope Day” on Tuesday, April 21, where students are calling on classmates, friends, faculty, staff and others to help push their current total past $50,000.
In 2013, the event’s first year at Elon, the community raised $30,420 for the American Cancer Society. Last spring, the event raised $50,041. Organizers said their goal this year is to donate $75,000 to the American Cancer Society, including funds collected by “Hope Day.”
A Luminaria Ceremony takes place at 9:30 p.m. Friday to grieve for loved ones lost to cancer and for survivors to reflect on their cancer experience. The field will be lined with luminaria bags dedicated to the loved ones of Elon students, faculty and staff.
Supporters can visit a luminary event on “Hope Day” after sundown at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday near Speakers Corner to purchase, dedicate and decorate luminaries for the Friday night relay program.
In addition to supporting cancer research, funds will help provide people with tools for cancer prevention, round-the-clock psychological services, and access to treatment.
“Relay for Life” will feature food trucks, a hypnotist, live musical performances, games, student-run fundraisers like a car-smash, puppies and more. Various cancer survivors will share their stories and inspire participants throughout the night
