Dozens of Elon University students, staff and faculty volunteered at a halfday program on April 24, 2015, that welcomed 375 athletes to campus for competition in the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex.
Athletes from local schools, group homes and independent homes competed in two events last month at the Special Olympics Alamance County Spring Games on Elon University’s campus.
Held April 24, 2015, on Belk Track and White Field in the Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex, athletes competed in softball/tennis ball distance throwing, and a run/walk of 25, 50 or 100 meters. The event was hosted in collaboration with the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement, and Elon Volunteers!
Graham Mayor Jerry Peterman emceed an event that featured representatives from local law enforcement agencies who presented the flag and led the national anthem.
Athlete Grace Ouzts carried the Olympic torch onto the field and, with the help of a runner form the Alamance County Sherriff’s Office, lit the cauldron to officially open the games.
Several activities took place for the 375 athletes including arts and crafts in OlympicTown, training stations managed by Elon’s Department of Physical Therapy, snacks provided by the Mayors Council for Persons with Disabilities, medical screenings from Piedmont Health Services, and support from Elon athletes who signed autographs and challenged athletes to games.
An Elon University Sport and Events Management class ran a hospitality tent and a T-shirt sales tent. Elon Volunteers! coordinated the event, helping student, faculty and staff volunteers spend the day with athletes and build relationships.
Special Olympics Alamance County offers a host of local and statewide sports competitions throughout the year. Spring Games attracted more than 1,500 people to campus to share the day with athletes.
