Eight varsity teams have received recognition from the NCAA for their commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes.
The NCAA has recognized the academic performance this year of more varsity sports teams at Elon University than any other school in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Elon University football, men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s golf and women’s tennis programs are among the NCAA Division I teams that received public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores, the NCAA announced on May 20, 2015.
Recognition is given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs. Elon led the Colonial Athletic Association with eight teams recognized, followed by William & Mary with six.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.
“We are very proud of the academic and athletic accomplishments our student-athletes continually achieve year after year,” said Director of Athletics Dave Blank. “The commitment that Elon student-athletes, coaches and administrators consistently demonstrate towards strong academic performance while competing for championships is the perfect combination for Elon University and our talented student-athletes.”
The NCAA annually honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate. The announcement is part of an overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
