The associate professor of psychology also will mentor the Periclean Scholars Class of 2019 with a focus on Sri Lanka.
As the program’s associate director, Gendle will work closely with director Tom Arcaro to facilitate the program on campus and with the national Project Pericles office in New York City. Elon’s 100-plus current Periclean scholars and 1,000 alumni can be found working around the globe in sustained ways, addressing some of the world’s most complex problems.
Gendle is a 12-year member of the Elon faculty in the Department of Psychology, interdisciplinary coordinator of the neuroscience program and long-time contributor to the Elon Core Curriculum. He earned his doctorate in psychology from Cornell University with a focus on biopsychology and studies of prenatal cocaine use and cognitive dysfunction. His undergraduate degrees are from Hobart College.
Gendle is a well-established faculty mentor on campus having facilitated 27 undergraduate research projects during his time here that have resulted in publications, conference presentations and an ongoing body of research.
He is the inaugural editor in chief of the journal Perspectives on Undergraduate Research and Mentoring. Gendle has also served as faculty for the Elon Academy and as a voice on community issues related to human rights, drug policy and fracking.
Gendle will mentor the Periclean Scholars Class of 2019 and has agreed to continue the strategic plan to revisit countries of focus with a return to Sri Lanka. He joins his faculty colleagues and Periclean mentors April Post (Honduras), Carol Smith (Namibia) and Steve Braye (Zambia).
