The award is offered to students who intend to transfer to the university.
The first Alamance Community College Scholarship was awarded to Moira Elliott of Alamance County. The award is given to ACC students based on character and academic prowess and is renewable for up to three years.
The scholarship was ratified after Elon President Leo M. Lambert and ACC President Algie Gatewood signed an agreement in October. Funded by anonymous donors, the $22,500 annual grant is applied toward the cost of tuition, fees, room and board.
The award seeks to help those who would be unable to attend Elon without significant financial aid. The recipient must have at least 24 transferrable credit hours, and preference is given to Alamance County residents. There is no application necessary- every ACC student with the minimum number of credit hours is considered.
Elliott finished her tenure at ACC with a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Outside of school, she works at Southeast Cinemas at Alamance Crossing and as an office assistant at ACC. She also volunteers for Allied Churches and has done advocacy work surrounding domestic abuse.
“Moira exemplifies the type of student that Elon needs — she is hardworking both in and out of the classroom,” said Kevin Napp, associate director of admissions at Elon. “We are very excited to have her here in the fall.”
