The assistant professor of accounting is being honored by Beta Alpha Psi for her work with Elon’s chapter of the international honor organization for financial information students and professionals.
Assistant Professor Patty Cox in the Department of Accounting, who also serves as the faculty advisor for Elon’s Lambda Xi chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, has been named an Outstanding Faculty Advisor by the Beta Alpha Psi national office.
The annual award, sponsored by McGladrey LLP, recognizes advisors who go above and beyond the requirements of a faculty advisor. Cox, along with faculty advisors from two other chapters, will receive the award at the Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting in August.
“As president, I got to see first hand just how much time Professor Cox spends organizing behind-the-scenes details for our weekly meetings, regional and annual meetings, and other various events,” said Richard Segal ’15, who was president of Elon’s chapter during the 2014-15 academic year. Segal noted the chapter owes much of its growth and success to Cox’s hard work, dedication and commitment.
“Officers change and members graduate, but the rock of our chapter is Professor Cox,” Segal said.
Cox has served as the Beta Alpha Psi faculty advisor since 2007. Under her leadership, the chapter has achieved “superior” and “gold” statuses by the national office, and was named Student Organization of the Year in the more than 30 members category by the Student Government Association in 2011 and 2015.
Elon won the 2011 Best Practices Competition during the Beta Alpha Psi southeast regional conference, placed third in the 2010 competition, and placed second in the 2009 and 2014 competitions. An Elon student was a member of the winning team in the 2009, 2010 and 2013 Project Run With It competitions held during the Beta Alpha Psi annual meeting.
Cox joined Elon’s faculty in 1987. During her tenure, she received the Love School of Business Dean’s Awards for Excellence in Service (2012) and Teaching (2007) and the Student Government Association’s Barbara H. Carlton Outstanding Faculty Advisor of the Year award (2011).
Cox has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is a certified public accountant in North Carolina.
