Barrett Weed ’11 and Charlie Johnson ’12 will each present cabaret performances in September at 54 Below, an esteemed Broadway cabaret venue in New York City.
Weed’s performance takes place Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 9:30 p.m. The following is taken from the 54 Below website:
“Barrett Weed originated the role of Veronica Sawyer in Heathers: The Musical, which got her nominated for a Lucille Lortel award and a Drama Desk award. She lost both awards to earthbound goddesses Ruthie Ann Miles and Jesse Mueller, which is cooler than being nominated in the first place. Barrett was also Nadia in the 2012 revival of Bare and Denise in Found at The Atlantic Theatre Company. She is on the original cast recordings of Heathers and Fugitive Songs. Join Barrett for a night of her favorite songs, trom John Mayer to Michael John LaChiusa. ‘Barrett seamlessly combines expert vocal skills with a modern perspective and a deep passion for storytelling. Her vocals are thrilling and her performances are astonishing in their multifaceted simplicity. She is something very new. She is something not to be missed.’”
Musical direction is provided by Chris Miller ’00, composer, and half of the duo Miller & Tysen, who have co-written The Burnt Part Boys, Fugitive Songs, and Tuck Everlasting, which premieres on Broadway this spring.
Johnson’s performance will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 11:30 p.m. From 54 Below: “After completing sold out runs at The Duplex and The Metropolitan Room, fast-rising cabaret artist Charlie Johnson is finally bringing his new act, CHARLIE! Anything but Basic, to 54 Below! Mr. Johnson’s style pairs classic cabaret with a modern day sensibility in a way no one else is doing. Through a mix of anecdotes, stand up, observations, and songs- Mr. Johnson creates an evening that is anything but basic. Brace yourself to be ENTERTAINED.”
Music direction is provided by Ethan Andersen ’14, composer of HeadVoice, which premiered at Elon in 2014, and debuted in New York this summer as part of the New York Music Theatre Festival.
