"Your Princess is in Another Castle: Harassment and Bullying in Gaming Culture and Digital Media," a talk by the digital media commentator and former "Jeopardy!" champion, takes place Monday at 5 p.m. in Lakeside Meeting Rooms.
The inaugural talk of the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Lecture Series takes place Monday when digital media commentator and former “Jeopardy!” champion Arthur Chu visits Elon University to deliver “Your Princess is in Another Castle: Harassment and Bullying in Gaming Culture and Digital Media.”
Chu’s visit is part of a grant provided by the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund to promote healthy relationships between young men and women and prevent domestic violence.
Chu will discuss issues of diversity in gaming and digital culture, how online toxicity is often “baked in” to digital communities, and the chilling, real-life impacts of this toxicity on human beings. Chu provides strategies for how men and women can relate to each other in healthy ways and move away from destructive patterns in online conversations.
The 5 p.m. program on Jan. 11 in the Lakeside Meeting Rooms is free and open to the public. His visit is presented by Women’s, Gender, and Sexualities Studies, and co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the School of Communications and the Gender and LGBTQIA Center.
Chu was propelled into the media spotlight when he became an 11-time winner on the game show Jeopardy! His unusual playing style triggered a viral deluge that brought Chu to the forefront of social media conversations. Since that time, Chu has become a columnist and media commentator on “nerd” culture, online identity, and issues of gender, sexuality and race in the gaming and technology industries.
Chu’s writings have appeared in The Daily Beast, Salon, Slate, The Washington Post, NPR, Pacific Standard and many others.
