The Elon team presented two case study analyses at the competition hosted by Dalhousie University.
Rebecca Herring, a junior international business major, Austin Hughes, a senior finance major, Andrew Lilley, a junior finance major, and Maximilian Rudisser, a senior finance major, represented Elon University in the 2015 Scotiabank Ethics in Action Case Competition, held November 6-7 at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.
The team was coached by Patrick Bell Sr., lecturer in management in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business.
The Ethics in Action competition aims to help prepare students with the tools needed to make complex business decisions while adhering to ethical principles. The competition involved teams presenting two case studies to a panel of judges. The first case study involved a medical products recall. The second case study, which the teams could not prepare for ahead of time, tasked teams to respond to a fictional ethical dilemma.
“The Scotiabank Ethics Case Competition was a very rewarding experience that taught me a great deal about the realities of the corporate world and the techniques necessary to combat the problems that arise,” Herring said. “Solving these real-world issues in a financially, as well as ethically, practical way challenged us to think critically and determine the underlying issues relevant to each specific case. Looking forward, these consulting skills strengthen my future professional career, regardless of which business sector I choose to specialize in.”
“Having the opportunity to work with other Elon students, some of which I have never interacted with before, towards one common goal proved to be the most rewarding part of this experience for me,” Rudisser added.
Dalhousie University was named the winner of the competition. The University of Prince Edward Island and the University of Alberta were awarded second and third place, respectively.
