More than 1,100 students, faculty and staff participated in a total of 45 programs around the world.
Study abroad has a storied history at Elon, with Winter Term being the busiest time of year for students traveling to global destinations. The record participation this year was due in large part to expanded Study USA offerings, which provide opportunities for students to explore diversity of culture, geography and climate in the United States. New Study USA courses included:
- Florida & California: Happiest Place? The Science of Happiness at Disney
- Florida, Miami: Ecology and Sustainability
- Iowa: The Trail Starts Here: The Iowa Caucuses
Elon is consistently ranked the nation’s #1 master’s-level university for international study by the Institute of International Education. Key to the university’s success is the preparation students receive for their Winter Term programs. Those enrolled to travel abroad each January take a one-credit course in the preceding fall semester, meeting with their faculty members and classmates as they learn in advance about the nations they plan to visit. The classes allow professors to forge strong relationships with their students and give students an avenue to learn about each other prior to their immersion in a new culture.
In addition to undergraduate course offerings, several Elon graduate programs participated in Winter Term programs abroad.
Elon University’s master’s program in Interactive Media sent student groups to complete international projects for the public good as part of their Winter Term “fly-in” experience. Upon their return, the groups built robust online presences for their respective nonprofit organizations, agencies and communities. Students traveled to Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ireland and the Dominican Republic.
As they have for several years, the Elon MBA and Elon School of Law students traveled together in Asia as they met with top business, government, law and banking leaders. They’ve traveled to China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam.
