A spring competition to reduce landfill waste began Feb. 15 with opportunities for teams and individuals to win prizes.
In 2013-2014 Elon recycled or composted about 30 percent of its waste. According to the EPA, on average this number could be higher than 75 percent.
The Phoenix Cup is a series of competitions aimed at reducing our collective ecological footprint. This semester the competition runs from Feb. 15 – March 4 and focuses on landfill waste reduction.
Phoenix Cup teams help reduce landfill waste by completing activities and attending events listed on the checklist to earn points and win prizes such as Phoenix Cash! Everyone can participate, individuals or teams of students or faculty/staff.
Teams should register by Feb. 17. All details and checklists can be found on the Phoenix Cup webpage.
The competition kicks off with “mug-shots” at College Coffee on Feb. 16. Anyone who brings a reusable mug can get a free flavor shot.
Team members can also earn points for attending the Bag It film screening in LaRose Digital Theatre on Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Snacks will be available.
