The Sunshine Center of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition is hosting Sunshine Day 2016 in the Keiser Community Room at the Salt Block Foundation in downtown Hickory on March 14.
The program includes an update on the North Carolina Public Records Law in the morning, an awards luncheon with keynote speech from Charleston Post & Courier Executive Editor Mitch Pugh, and an afternoon discussion of police video that will include Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock.
In 2015 the Post & Courier won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for its reporting on domestic violence in South Carolina. Much of the newspaper’s reporting was based on public records. The newspaper is also involved in an ongoing public records fight over access to records in the case of Dylann Roof who is accused of killing nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during a prayer service in Charleston last summer. Executive Editor Mitch Pugh will share stories of his newspaper’s efforts to get access to records in both cases.
Winners of the Second Annual Sunshine Awards Program will be announced during lunch.
