Luke Bierman, dean of the Elon University School of Law, offered the following statement regarding the nomination of Merrick Garland, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, to the United States Supreme Court.
President Barack Obama has nominated Merrick Garland, chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, to the U.S. Supreme Court seat vacated in February by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
Luke Bierman, dean of the Elon University School of Law, issued the following statement shortly after Garland’s nomination was formally announced on March 16, 2016:
“U.S. Supreme Court nominations have become high spectacle and this one promises to fulfill that standard. This may be the most important nomination since George Washington appointed the first justices but its impact will surely be overshadowed by those to follow when a new president and the Senate will likely fill as many as four seats and frame the Supreme Court for a generation. From this perspective, whatever happens now will seem tame in comparison with the battles to come.”
