Director of Choral Activities Stephen A. Futrell presented a symposium at the Southern Division Conference of the American Choral Directors Association
Associate Professor of Music Stephen A. Futrell discussed the “modern a cappella” movement and connected its evolution to the history of vocal jazz/a cappella singing from European traditions as far back as the Renaissance, to music of various cultures (including Africa and South America) on to developments on the North American continent. Traditions such as Mbube, Isacathamiya, work songs from various cultures, slave songs, spirituals, early jazz were explored. Futrell currently serves as Repertoire and Research Chair for the North Carolina State Chapter of ACDA.
