Officials from Elon University and the Town of Elon will hold a short ceremony to commemorate the removal of a section of the historic wall along Williamson Avenue in downtown Elon.
The event will be at at the wall removal site. The northbound lane of Williamson Avenue north of Lebanon Avenue will be closed for about 30 minutes to allow for the ceremony.
A 50-foot section of the west campus wall will be permanently removed as part of the construction of new facilities for the School of Communications. The new facilities at the corner of Williamson and Lebanon avenues will open onto a pedestrian plaza that will become part of the downtown Elon streetscape. The section of wall being removed has been in place since 1925.
The wall removal ceremony will include remarks from Elon University President Leo M. Lambert, Town of Elon Mayor Jerry Tolley and School of Communications Dean Paul Parsons. Bricks from the wall will be removed and given to university and town representatives for inclusion in their archive collections.
