“Tackling Climate Change” lecture kicks off activities leading up to Earth Day

Eileen Claussen is the founding President of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, formerly the Pew Center on Global Climate Change. The Center is an internationally recognized non-government organization known for its work with the progressive business community.

Claussen has also worked as a Senior Director at the National Security Council, at the EPA, and as an Assistant Secretary of State. Through her work with government and business nationally and internationally, Claussen has experience with diplomacy addressing complex issues, such as climate change, trade and the environment, economics and natural resource management.

Claussen has received numerous honors, including the Fitzhugh Green Award for Outstanding Contributions to International Environmental Protection and the Department of State’s Career Achievement Award.

She is currently serving as an Executive-in-Residence for the Elon University Martha and Spencer Love School of Business where she is advising students on career options in sustainability and the public sector, sharing insights from her career and advising the school on its sustainability curriculum.

Claussen received a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University, a master’s degree in English from the University of Virginia and an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.

Claussen will discuss the implications of a changing climate, the strategies and solutions for addressing it, and the roles of the major players, governments, businesses…and us.

The lecture marks the beginning of events happening all around campus leading up Earth Day, April 22.  The concluding event for the week is ‘Party for the Planet’, a fun gathering of student organizations related to sustainability and entertainment.  Party for the Planet will be on Speakers Corner from 3-6 p.m. on April 22 and was planned by Eco-Reps.
