Donations benefit regional charities and assist those in need in Alamance County and beyond.
Beginning May 11, the Elon community can conveniently donate usable items at one of nine campus locations as part of “Don’t Trash It!” campaign, which diverts items from the landfill and gets them to people in need by working with community organizations. The campaign runs through May 25.
In 2015 more than five tons of items were collected. Accepted donations include:
- Unopened, nonperishable food
- Clean sheets, blankets and comforters
- Furniture
- Clean clothing and miscellaneous housewares, including functioning electronics.
Broken electronics can be placed in the “small electronics” recycling bins located throughout campus. Here is a map of electronics recycling locations.
Donated items go to Allied Churches, First Presbyterian Church, Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill, Hospice of Alamance Caswell and Helping Other People Everyday.
Every residential neighborhood has a “Donation Station” where items can be dropped off. Students living off campus, faculty and staff can drop items off directly at the Habitat for Humanity and Goodwill trucks parked in the Oaks parking lot. The trucks will be open for donations from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Students living off campus may also call a campus partner to arrange for pick-up of large items.
For “Donation Station” locations, information on what items are accepted and for community partner phone numbers see the FAQ sheet.
“Don’t Trash it!” was initiated in 2008 by the Truitt Center for Spiritual and Religious Life. It is currently coordinated by the Office of Sustainability in partnership with Residence Life, Greek Life, Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community, Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, Allied Churches, First Presbyterian Church and Hospice of Alamance Caswell.
Anyone interested in additional information or volunteering to help with the campaign may contact Jessica Bilecki, education and outreach coordinator in the Office of Sustainability at (336) 278-5227.
