The professor of law discussed "the history of states’ rights and how the balance of power has evolved over the years."
Professor Scott W. Gaylord spoke with Georgia Public Broadcasting in June for a segment on the history of states’ rights at a time when national controversy over North Carolina’s “bathroom bill” has raised questions about the limits of federal involvement in state issues.
Georgia is one of 11 states suing the Obama administration over directives on bathroom use in public schools.
“How Much Power Rests With State Governments?” was featured on GPB’s popular news program “On Second Thought.” The program is a one-hour, daily news talk show that airs weekdays at 9 a.m.
The show also touched upon growing policy discussions around gun control and what states can do to regulate firearm ownership.
Before joining Elon, Gaylord practiced with the Charlotte, N.C. firm of Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson, handling complex civil and commercial litigation involving breach of contract, unfair trade practice, bankruptcy and appellate work in both state and federal courts. A constitutional law scholar, Gaylord’s most recent scholarship examines the scope of First Amendment speech and religion under the Roberts Court.
