Elon University named one of the nation’s “Great Colleges to Work For”

The Chronicle of Higher Education recognizes Elon on its 2016 honor roll of universities that support an outstanding work environment for faculty and staff members.

Elon University has been named a 2016 "Great College to Work For."
Elon University is named one of the nation’s top 30 four-year institutions for faculty and staff members in the 2016 ranking of “Great Colleges to Work For,” published by The Chronicle of Higher Education. The ninth annual ranking of outstanding schools was released in an Academic Workplace Special Issue on July 18. Elon earns recognition as an “honor roll” university and is named for excellence in five categories of workplace environment. This is Elon’s fourth recognition in The Chronicle’s ranking of great college work environments.

“This recognition is based on the opinions of our dedicated faculty and staff, who demonstrate their commitment every day to Elon’s student-centered mission,” said Elon University President Leo M. Lambert. “These community members, who contribute an amazing array of talents and leadership, are Elon’s most important resource. We are gratified at the pride they express in their careers and for their common commitment to shaping an extraordinary learning environment.”

The Chronicle surveyed employees at 281 colleges and universities, working with ModernThink LLC, a research firm that studies workplace issues in a variety of industries. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition is employee feedback.

“The ‘Great Colleges to Work For’ program is well known as a mark of a college or university that puts thought and effort into serving the needs of its faculty and staff,” said Liz McMillen, editor of The Chronicle. “The colleges and universities that make the list are highly rated by their employees for creating great working environments, an important achievement that helps them recruit top academic and administrative talent.”

Among medium-sized universities, Elon is recognized for excellence in the following categories:

  • Collaborative Governance – Faculty members are appropriately involved in decisions related to academic programs
  • Teaching Environment – Faculty members say the institution recognizes innovative and high-quality teaching
  • Professional/Career-Development Programs – Employees are given the opportunity to develop skills and understand requirements to advance in their careers
  • Job Satisfaction and Support – Provides insight into the satisfaction with job fit, autonomy, and resources
  • Confidence in Senior Leadership – Leaders have the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience for institutional success

The Chronicle’s survey included 65 questions related to employee attitudes about working at Elon. Faculty and staff gave the highest positive marks to their pride in the university, with 92 percent saying they understand how their job contributes to the institution’s mission. Ninety percent agreed that Elon supports faculty/staff efforts devoted to mentoring students, 87 percent said Elon actively contributes to the community and the same number said the university provides a safe and secure environment for the campus.

Eighty-two percent of Elon employees said their job makes good use of their skills and abilities; 83 percent said senior leadership has the knowledge, skills and experience necessary for institutional success; and 82 percent said Elon is making good progress toward valuing differences.

Elon’s employee satisfaction was consistently higher than for several peer universities in The Chronicle’s survey, with significantly higher positive responses at Elon for faculty, administration and staff relations; respect and appreciation; shared governance; teaching environment; and confidence in senior leadership.
