Leaders from Elon’s LGBTQIA Alumni Network Leadership Team met Aug. 12-13 in Washington, D.C., as a part of their Leadership Retreat for 2016.
Thanks to leadership team member Ashley Fowler ’14, the team met at the headquarters of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) for a series of meetings and discussions about how to further engage LGBTQIA alumni and support the efforts of the Gender and LGBTQIA Center (GLC) on campus.
After a fun-filled night of bowling at Pinstripes in Georgetown, the team started bright and early the next day to become more familiar with the Office of Alumni Engagement and GLC. After learning more about Elon’s broad alumni base, the team started developing a strategic plan on how to engage with LGBTQIA alumni throughout the year.
Plans for Homecoming weekend were created and this year’s recipients of the LGBTQIA Alumni Community Engagement Awards were selected. The team also broke into groups to focus on specific ways to continue the GLC’s efforts at creating a safe and supportive campus environment at Elon, as well as ways for Elon’s LGBTQIA alumni to feel more connected and active with those efforts.
There’s a lot more coming from this group throughout the year, so keep an eye on E-net and the group’s webpage for more information. If you’d like to become a part of the LGBTQIA Alumni Network, please contact Deidra Smith, assistant director of alumni engagement at dsmith79@elon.edu.
