Alumnus endows scholarship to increase access to Elon

Cam Tims ’00, president of the Elon Alumni Board, has increased his longtime support of scholarships by making a generous gift to endow the Tims Access Scholarship.

​ The Tims Access Scholarship will assist students from his home state of Mississippi as well as from surrounding states — Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee. Tims said he hopes the scholarship will help bring more students to Elon from his home state.

“I’m very proud of my home state of Mississippi, and I want someone from Mississippi or the surrounding states to have the chance to come to Elon and have the same great experience that I did,” Tims said.

Tims understands how critical scholarship funding is to Elon’s future and to ensuring the university remains accessible to students from many socioeconomic backgrounds, which is one of the university’s top priorities.

“I am concerned that higher education is out of reach for many people, and that’s not unique to Elon,” Tims said. “I love what Elon has given me, and I still feel like the investment in an Elon education is so worthwhile. I want to give someone else that same experience.”

Tims is one of Elon’s most devoted graduates. He served as a founding member of the university’s Young Alumni Council, is a member of the Raleigh alumni chapter and is a member of Order of the Oak, Elon’s planned giving society, after placing the university in his estate.

“I believe in giving the three T’s — time, talent and treasure — to Elon,” Tims said. “I have had a lot of volunteer positions with the university and given a lot of time to Elon, and now I’m working to give some treasure. I look at it as a lifelong relationship with a community I feel very deeply about.”
