Congratulations to Class of 2018 PA Student Steven (Kyle) Fleener who has been notified that he was selected for a highly competitive National Health Service Corps scholarship.
Kyle is a 2012 graduate of East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology/health science. His interest in health and science goes back many years. He was raised in the NC Blue Ridge Mountains in a rural area, and saw the day-to-day challenges for people with limited incomes and limited access to health care.
As a result, he gained experience working in a variety of medical settings and also actively pursued volunteer community service opportunities including Open Door Clinic of Alamance County and Remote Access Medical Clinic as well as United Way, Habitat for Humanity and the Boys and Girls Club. As a graduate, Kyle plans to pursue a career providing primary care to underserved populations.
He joins four Elon alumnae who are recipients of the NHSC scholarship program who are currently serving as PAs in health professional shortage areas in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Minnesota.
The NHSC is a Federal government program administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Health Workforce that since 1972 has been placing primary health care providers in areas of the United States with limited access to care. The program pays students’ tuition, books, and other costs, and provides a living stipend, while students train to become a primary care provider. In exchange, graduates commit to serving for at least two years at an NHSC site within in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).
