Republican John McConnell, former White House speechwriter for President George W. Bush, and Democrat David Halperin, former National Security Council speechwriter for President Bill Clinton, will offer their perspectives on this historical race on Oct. 4 and 5.
The Core Curriculum Forum and Study USA are pleased to announce the CORE October Forum on the upcoming presidential election. Republican John McConnell, former White House speechwriter for President George W. Bush, and Democrat David Halperin, former National Security Council speechwriter for President Bill Clinton, will offer their perspectives on this historical race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
John McConnell held the posts of deputy assistant to the president and assistant to the vice president during the Bush administration. He was one of the writers of President Bush’s address to a joint session of Congress following the Sept. 11 attacks and he wrote President Bush’s eulogies for Ronald Reagan and the Columbia Space Shuttle astronauts. He has traveled to over 30 countries on Air Force One and Air Force Two. He is a graduate of Yale Law School and a member of the Bar of the District of Columbia.
David Halperin held the post of special assistant for national security affairs under President Bill Clinton and is the founding director of Campus Progress and former vice president of the Center for American Progress. He also served as policy adviser to Howard Dean’s 2004 presidential campaign and as counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Halperin co-founded the Internet company, RealNetworks.
They will also offer observations from their time working closely with the president of the United States in the White House during moments of crisis including 9/11 and Embassy bombings in Africa in 1998. There will also be opportunities for students and faculty to ask questions of the panelists.

Tuesday, Oct. 4, 8 to 9:10 a.m. and 2:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 5, 9:25 to 10:35 a.m and 12:15 to 1:25 p.m.
