Elementary education seniors attend state conference for math teachers

The annual conference offers students professional development and networking opportunities.

On Oct. 27, all 29 seniors in the elementary education program at Elon attended the N.C. Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual conference in Greensboro.

Faculty members Mark Enfield and Erin Hone have taken their seniors to this same conference for several years because of the professional development and networking opportunities the conference presents for the pre-service teachers. During their various sessions, the cohort communicated through GroupMe messaging, highlighting strategies and practices they were learning, resources they gained and connections they made to their coursework.

“This event is always a highlight of the semester by the students,” Hone said. “It occurs at the point in the semester where they have learned so much, and this conference further validates and highlights all they have learned. It also gives them a chance to see how practicing teachers seek professional development for their own growth.”
