The associate professor of education and director of the Teaching Fellows program was involved in two different presentations at the NCTE Annual Convention in Atlanta, Georgia from Nov. 17-20.
Jeffrey Carpenter, associate professor of education, gave a presentation titled “Backchannels Empower Students and Demystify Literacy” that attracted a standing-room only audience. The presentation addressed why and how educators use digital backchannels to enhance the teaching and learning that occurs in their courses.
Carpenter also gave a research roundtable presentation titled “Educator Perceptions of the Global Read Aloud,” that was based on a study conducted with Elon colleague Julie Justice, assistant professor of education. The research reports on 516 educators’ perceptions of their experiences in the 2015 Global Read Aloud project, a grassroots literacy initiative that connects classrooms from around the world in the shared reading and discussion of common texts.
