Chimi Boyd-Keyes will be coming to Elon on Tuesday, Feb. 14, to host the workshop, “Everything Matters: Considerations for Serving African-American Survivors.” The training will provide resources for supporting African-American survivors of violence.
Description of the Workshop:
What barriers and needs should be taken into account when serving and responding to members of your community who are African American? It is imperative to understand the factors that prevent many survivors of violence from reporting the violence. Inequalities, from historical to contemporary discrimination and other variables, contribute to a distrust of formal systems in spite of the need for assistance.
In addition, we must reconsider the notion that one-size-fits-all in our community programming and education. Through a series of interactive exercises, including small and large group discussions, and role-play, we will explore ways to include intersectionality, privilege and oppression in our advocacy work.
The workshop will be Feb. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Moseley 215 with a 90-minute break for lunch.
