Elon Law students built professional networks and learned more about opportunities in specific areas of law during a weeklong event welcoming more than 40 alumni back to campus.
Elon Law alumni from across the region returned to campus in mid February for a weeklong program that helped current students build professional networks while learning firsthand about the opportunities and challenges of practicing law once out of school.
The second annual Alumni Involvement Week highlighted for current students the value they receive through connections with the Elon Law alumni community, said Gwendolyn Lewis L’13, Elon Law’s alumni director.
“AIumni Involvement Week provided a number of different opportunities, at various times throughout the day, for our alumni to return to the law school and meet current students,” she said.
More than 40 alumni visited for a special networking breakfast; career and minority experience-focused panels; mock interviews; and practice area talks hosted by alumni. During those talks, alumni share wisdom and advice for students with interest in particular practice areas.
Jaclyn Maffetore L’16, a Legal Fellow at the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, took part in “Minority Perspectives in the Profession,” a Feb. 15 lunch hour panel discussion sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations and the Black Law Students Association. Maffetore said her own professional success stems in part from networking with alumni while studying at Elon Law.
“It’s nice to know Elon Law values my experience as a brand new lawyer and wants me to share that experience,” she said.
Several Elon Law faculty welcomed alumni into their classrooms to introduce themselves to current students and showcase the personal and professional awards of their various practice areas. Alumni spoke with income tax, civil procedure, criminal law, business association, wills & trusts, and immigration law courses.
Alumni will return to campus again in April for Alumni Reunion Weekend. Additional details of the program are included in the Winter 2017 edition of the Elon Law Alumni Bulletin and will be shared online in early March as additional events are finalized.
