Elon’s Center for Engaged Learning was represented in a recent Association of American Colleges and Universities presentation featuring findings from the center’s 2015-17 research seminar on Integrating Global Learning with the University Experience.
Jessie L. Moore, director of the Center for Engaged Learning and associate professor of English, along with Nina Namaste, associate professor of Spanish and research seminar leader, led a roundtable discussion at AAC&U’s 2017 Meeting, held in San Francisco this January.
The presentation drew from multi-institutional research by 26 researchers from 20 institutions in Canada and the U.S. to examine study away’s integration with the university experience. Global experiences intentionally woven through the curriculum (Vande Berg et. al, 2012) can transform students, educators and institutions (Brewer, 2009). In turn, scholarship that conceptualizes study away as global learning practices integrated into a university education can lead to higher-impact study away.
The discussion focused on how this research might inform efforts at the institutional, programmatic and faculty levels to integrate study away within the university experience. The AAC&U presentation and the research seminar on Integrating Global Learning with the University Experience are examples of the Center for Engaged Learning’s efforts to bring together international leaders in higher education to develop and to synthesize rigorous research on central questions about student learning. The Center fosters investigations of engaged learning and high-impact educational practices; hosts multi-institutional research and practice-based initiatives, conferences, and seminars; and shares related resources for faculty and faculty developers on high-impact practices for engaged learning.
