Registration opens for the Center for Engaged Learning's Symposium on Global Learning

The Center for Engaged Learning's Symposium on Integrating Global Learning with the University Experience: Higher-Impact Study Abroad and Off-Campus Domestic Study will be held June 11-12 at Elon.

The Center for Engaged Learning is pleased to sponsor the Symposium on Integrating Global Learning with the University Experience: Higher-Impact Study Abroad and Off-Campus Domestic Study on June 11-12, 2017.

Presenters will share new research on student and faculty experiences with study away and its integration with broader university education. Elon faculty who are presenting are Amy Allocco, Michael Carignan, Elizabeth Coder, Daniel Faill, Cynthia Fair, Sarah Glasco, Prudence Layne, Carmen Monico, Joan Ruelle and Maureen Vandermaas-Peeler.

Our closing keynote speaker is Dawn Michele Whitehead, Senior Director for Global Learning and Curricular Change at the Association of American Colleges and Universities. At the association, Whitehead’s work focuses on advancing practices, strategies and projects for integrative global learning across the undergraduate curriculum. Her work focuses on integrative global learning with an emphasis on thematic local and international experiences that provide students with globalized learning opportunities throughout their education to prepare them to function and thrive in the modern world.

At the heart of her work is the concept of inclusive excellence to ensure all students have access to high-quality global learning experiences. She earned her doctorate in education policy studies with a doctoral minor in international and comparative education and a concentration in African studies and her master’s degree in international and comparative education at Indiana University Bloomington.

An opening keynote will feature seminar leaders from the Center’s 2015-17 multi-institutional research seminar on Integrating Global Learning with the University Experience , which has fostered much of the research featured at this symposium.

Registration is now open.

Elon faculty and staff may attend for free, courtesy of the Center. Register by May 26th using your Elon email address and select the “Pay by Check” payment option.  For others interested in attending, registration is $175 for faculty and $155 for students. This symposium registration fee covers symposium materials and speaker fees; Sunday’s dinner and dessert reception; and Monday’s breakfast, lunch and break services.

The research seminar and this summer’s symposium are just two examples of the Center for Engaged Learning’s efforts to bring together international leaders in higher education to develop and to synthesize rigorous research on central questions about student learning. The Center fosters investigations of engaged learning and high-impact educational practices; hosts multi-institutional research and practice-based initiatives, conferences, and seminars; and shares related resources for faculty and faculty developers on high-impact practices for engaged learning.
