The associate professor of music, who directs choral activities at Elon, also performed in concert.
By invitation, Director of Choral Activities Stephen A. Futrell visited the University of Colorado Boulder from Feb. 28 through March 5.
While in Boulder, Futrell worked with several area high school choirs and vocal jazz ensembles. Futrell also worked with the CU vocal jazz ensembles leading to a culminating concert on March 5 that included vocal jazz groups from Fairview High School (Boulder). At CU, Futrell also lectured on interpretation of German part songs by Johannes Brahms in the graduate choral literature class and worked with the CU University Singers in rehearsal on Brahms’ Nänie. In addition, Futrell coached master’s and doctoral students in private conducting lessons.
CU Director of Choral Studies Gregory Gentry offers: “Dr. Futrell has an open offer to guest lecture at CU anytime. He was equally at home instructing graduate choral conductors, coaching the Brahms Nänie masterwork, and leading our three vocal jazz ensembles. One of our undergrads mentioned to me she felt Dr. Futrell was a ‘wonderful teacher’ and was impressed with his insights. Dr. Futrell is a versatile and strong leader in the field of choral music.”
