Crowds gathered around Elon's campus to take in the partial eclipse Monday afternoon, but miss out on a peek at the peak coverage as clouds roll in. 

Elon President Leo M. Lambert presented the medallion to five retired faculty and staff members for their meritorious service to the university during an event marking the start of a new academic year. The university also recognized four endowed professorships and two longtime professors were named Distinguished University Professors. 

Kathy Matera, a professor of chemistry, will spend the next two years as the Japheth E. Rawls Professor for Undergraduate Research in Science. 

The team-based field day will feature up to 96 teams in competition in a variety of events. Registration begins Aug. 27.

During his 10-week fellowship this summer, the Elon University journalism and media analytics double major joined 28 student journalists to investigate drinking water contamination in communities across the country.

India Johnson, an assistant professor of psychology, has been awarded a small research grant through the Society for Personality and Social Psychology and has co-authored a recent paper in the Journal of Experimental and Social Psychology.

The endowed professorship is funded by the estate of the late Isabella Cannon ’24, a former mayor of Raleigh, N.C.
