The event invited sophomore business students to participate in a program focused on building professional skills.
Forty-eight sophomores in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business enhanced their professional development at Sophomore Success, a program designed for sophomores and hosted by the Porter Family Professional Development Center. The Oct. 19 event provided opportunities for students to strengthen their professional skills through the practice, feedback and learning structure of the event.
Students met and interacted with professional representatives and alumni from companies including Action Greensboro, Apex Systems, Bernard Robinson and Co., FactSet, Gartner, NetApp, PwC, Relias, RSM, SAS, Staples, Vanguard and VF Corp. The sophomores also had their resumes reviewed, practiced interviewing, learned about nonverbal body language and took a LinkedIn professional headshot.
“The sophomore success workshop was a great experience to meet with employers and enhance our professional skills,” said Grayson Albers ’20. “I particularly enjoyed the mock interviews because the feedback was extremely helpful. I now feel more confident approaching internship and job interviews.”
“One of the highlights of the event is receiving feedback from employers because first impressions really do matter,” said Danielle Golinski, assistant director of career services for the Love School of Business. “Great things can happen when students are alongside peers and step outside of their comfort zone.”
The North Carolina Career Development Association (NCCDA) recently awarded Golinski a grant to continue and grow this career development program. “I truly believe that this event is perfectly timed for a student’s tenure at Elon, especially as it’s never too early to begin professional development,” said Golinski.
The Porter Family Professional Development Center builds lasting relationships with students by offering support and coaching throughout the student’s academic and professional journey in the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. The center’s staff offers consultative one-on-one meetings with students to create an action plan that will help each student secure the internship or job that best suits their career goals.
