Elon student-athletes visited Garrett Elementary to read to students as part of the One Book, One School project.
Fifteen student-athletes visited Garrett Elementary in Mebane in December to read to students as part of the One Book, One School project.
Garrett Elementary School Principal Michelle Ammann launched the reading program to encourage her students to see the joy in reading. The One Book, One School Project creates an interactive reading experience that allows student from kindergarten through 5th grade to read and learn together.
Elon Athletics was invited to participate in this project on a school reading day. A group of 15 student-athletes from football, softball, track & field, and cross-country teams had the opportunity to be guest readers, partnering with student groups from all grade levels. They read "The World According to Humphrey," the story of a school’s pet hamster and his travels to the homes of different students.
“The Elon student-athletes did an amazing job as readers and role models for our students. I received very positive feedback from students, staff, and parents!” Ammann said.
Student-athlete involvement with Garrett Elementary is part of a larger effort of Elon Athletics’ new partnership with the Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement. Molly McInerney, student services coordinator for Elon Athletics, and Sarah Williams, program coordinator for the Kernodle Center, are managing an NCAA grant that is focused in part on increasing student-athlete involvement in service, providing education around social issues and community engagement, expanding involvement in the Service ELR, and documenting the student-athletes’ service.
Student-athletes wishing to volunteer in the local community or learn more about the Service ELR can reach out to Molly McInerney.
