Barnett, associate provost for academic and inclusive excellence at Elon, was one of eight new directors named to the national organization’s board.
Brooke Barnett, associate provost for academic and inclusive excellence at Elon, has been selected to serve on the board of the Association of American Colleges and Universities.
A professor of communications and member of the Elon faculty since 2001, Barnett was one of eight new directors elected at the annual meeting of the AAC&U. Founded in 1915, AAC&U is a leading national higher education association with 1,400 member institutions including accredited public and private colleges, community colleges, research universities, and comprehensive universities of every type and size.
“I am honored to join the AAC&U Board to serve with these fellow leaders during a time when we face significant societal shifts impacting higher education,” Barnett said.
Members of the AAC&U board include top leaders from higher education institutions and their partners from across the country. Board members serve two-year terms and are eligible for reappointment.
Barnett brings to the AAC&U board a wealth of professional and academic experience and leadership. Since shifting from journalism practice to higher education, she has worked in collaboration with students and colleagues to produce interactive teaching materials and documentary media projects. She was the founding director of the Elon Program for Documentary Production and executive director of the Sunshine Center of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition.
An active scholar, Barnett regularly publishes and presents on media and diversity and inclusion topics and her books include “Multidisciplinary Approaches to Communication Law Research,” “Media coverage of crisis: The war on terror and the wars in Iraq,” “The Press and Terrorism: An Uneasy relationship,” “An Introduction to Visual Theory and Practice in the Digital Age” and “Intersectionality in Action: A Guide for Faculty and Campus Leaders for Creating Inclusive Classrooms and Institutions.”
